New Tiny Camera to Spy on Your Bowels
March 13, 2011 in Medicine
The Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) has developed a 1 millimeter disposable digital camera that can be cheaply mass produced. In theory, this could lead to the development and marketing of semi or fully disposable endoscopes that are cheaper and smaller then those currently in use. In the future, every primary care physician could provide screening endoscopic exams without a referral to an expensive gastroenterologist. And, in the future Medicare will likely cut reimbursements for exams with disposable endoscopes to the point where primary care docs barely break even.
