“Where’s My Free Obama Care?”

April 9, 2010 in Health Care "Reform", Health Policy by RangelMD

YEAH! The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed and signed into law on March 23rd, so where the hell is my free health care? This is what thousands of callers to eHealthInsurance.com’s  information number have been asking according to Carrie McLean, a consumer specialist for the company.

“We actually started to get calls right when President Obama was elected from people thinking that things were going to change instantly. Once the bill passed, we started to get calls into our call center from people wanting to know if they were going to have ‘free Obama care.’ People are confused about what the bill means, and what’s in it.”

Given Bush’s eight year effort to hyper-inflate the power of the executive branch, I could understand how some might become confused about the power of the Presidency. But to believe that a government entitlement program would be up and running within a few weeks of being created is an entirely different kind of stupid altogether! This is the Federal government we are talking about here! It”s the same organization that paid over $400 for a hammer, lost track of BILLIONS of dollars in war spending, and regularly loses hundreds of computers containing huge amounts of personal sensitive information.

Most of these inquisitive callers are likely to be in an economic situation in which they are already familiar with the bureaucratic headaches, stupidity, and inefficiency that is a government run social program. So there is absolutely no excuse to explain why they should be expecting their “go to the ER free” card in the mail. In fact, many of these expanded Medicaid coverage programs and subsidies for health insurance won’t even see the light of day until 2014.

And even then it won’t be “free”.
